Welcome to our brand new project... Tangled Tree Gallery is coming soon and we couldn't be more excited!
Tangled Tree Gallery
Contemporary Fine Art & Craft
What: TTG is a unique, micro sized touring contemporary art & craft gallery based in Calgary, Ab Canada. It features exhibition and workshop space, solar power, sustainable building materials and off-grid amenities. It is a mobile venue with a jam-packed schedule in 2018 including participation in local festivals, fairs and events in Alberta.
TTG features 10-12 group or solo exhibitions of small-scale works per year, each lasting approximately 3-6 weeks. Each exhibition is juried from a selection of works submitted during our calls for submission which occur multiple times per year. Each exhibition will be curated by a committee of two: founder and director Kristine Thoreson, PhD along with a special guest artist or curator.
TTG is interested in showing a broad range of media and thematics, however we are especially interested in small-scale works that engage with theory and / or practice of: sustainable living, environmental stewardship, space & place, nature & culture, the built and the natural environments, consumer culture, visual culture, design thinking, Slow Living, Northern cultures and visual culture, renewable energy technology and up cycled or recycled materials.
Featuring fine art and craft from local and international artists and artisans, TTG is a leading edge example of a business with a small footprint and a big opportunity for advancing knowledge through art practice and education. Each exhibition features either an artist's talk or curators talk and opportunities for workshops that involve the audience in experiential learning, skill development or leadership development in conjunction with each specific exhibition theme.
Where: TTG is currently scheduled to attend a number of festivals and events throughout 2018. The schedule will be posted here as soon as it's ready! We are also available for bookings and will travel to your event with our exhibition or exhibition and workshops (fees apply). Please enquire about having us join your event or visit your community, organization, department, grade school class, college or university! We'd love to work with you!
Who: Developed and directed by artist, event producer and educator Kristine Thoreson, (Phd in Research Creation in studio art and photography of the Circumpolar north). Call for Entries:
It is easy to recognize the white-washed, out-of-this-world wonderlands, icebergs and ice sheets of northern places, the ones made famous by historic pictures of the Franklin Expedition or the Bradford Expedition, or even by modern day journalists and art photographers such as Paul Nicklen or Olaf Otto Becker. But do we have an idea of what people living in these and other regions of the north look like and what their day-to-day lives entail in 2017?
Who considers themselves to be northern? Where is 'the north'? When we say northern - "compared to what?" seems an appropriate question as well. This exhibition explores these ideas and asks artists to consider where 'north' is for them, and show us how northern regions are made up of varied geographical, geological and peopled places.
Selected works will be exhibited at the Tangled Tree Gallery in a group exhibition during the Exposure Photography Festival 2018 from Feb 1st to 28th.
